Synopsis:
In the story a Russian officer of German ancestry named Hermann, who dreams of becoming a member of the Russian elite. Every night he constantly watches the other gamble, but never plays for himsef. One night, Tomsky tells a story about the strategy to win the gamble. His grandmother, an elderly countess. She lost a fortune at cards and then won it back with the secret of the three winning cards, with she learn from the notorious Count of St. Germain. Hermann becomes obsessed with obtaining the secret.

The Countess resides with her niece, Liza.
Hermann decides to manipulate Lisa and allows her to fall in love with him so that
he can entered to the Countess’s home. After that Hermann force the
Countess to reveal her secret. But, the countess refuses to reveal the secret,
he threatens her with a pistol and she dies of fright. Herman attend the
countess’s funeral and he is terrible to see the countess open her eyes
and look at him. In the night, he dreams
that the countess has told him the winning cards—three, seven, and ace. The
Countess lays out the conditions that are harmful to Hermann in the end. The
Countess tells him that after using the secret he is forbidden to ever use it
again. He is given the key to eternal fortune and then told he can only use it
once. then he come to the Chekalinsky’s house, a famous gambler to playing
card. Hermann places bets on the three and seven and wins. After betting
everything on the ace, which wins. But he makes such a stupid mistake, instead
of an ace but he hold the queen of spades. Hermann is horror-stricken to see
that he is holding not the ace but the queen of spades, who seems to smile up
at him as did the countess from her casket. He was lost everything. Hermann
became mad and put in a hospital.
